Seeing them get excited about learning new cooking techniques is also entertaining, and the "Snack Challenge" segment helps them show off their creativity. Educational without being dry, the show's at its strongest when it shows real kids interacting in and with nature, explaining what they like about growing and eating foods. The elevator pitch for this show could be "It's a mashup between Captain Planet and Yo Gabba Gabba! with a twist of Master Chef Junior" - and that's not far off. Musical guests also appear, including Neon Trees and Biz Markie. There are animated bits, including playful explanations of concepts like ecosystems, being an carnivore versus an herbivore, and more. Kids compete against one another in a timed contest to make the tastiest snack from the materials they're given, and to do so before the evil "Pepperjack" sabotages their creations with an unwanted dose of spicy pepper from his mill. In the "Now You're Cookin'" segments, celebrity chefs like Amanda Freitag ( Chopped) and Duff Goldman ( Ace of Cakes) help kids get their aprons dirty learning to cook fun basics like customized omelets and sandwich cookies. We see firsthand how the cheese that goes into a grilled cheese sandwich makes it's way from the farm to the grocery store to the fridge at home. Kids who live on farms are filmed working in the fields and explaining how plants grow, and what it means for a food to be "local". Colorfully-wigged hostess Tricket and her talking boombox companion Lo-Fi are our spaceship-bound guides, and help set up the show's various segments that jump between live action, animation, cooking demonstrations and musical numbers. There will be a national re-release beginning May 8th.The RAD in RAD Lands stands for Respect, Appreciate, Defend - specifically, in regards to the plants and animals that make up our food supply. It's a shame that both the movie and the soundtrack are out of print because Rad has suddenly made a comeback due to one thing: BMX is back! The mountainbike is fading.įeb 2020 Update: Michael Putlack kindly updated to say: Yo! Rad has been restored and is getting a new 4k version premiering at this year's SXSW. Rad has bike stunts/races throughout, starting with the intro, then Cru and his friends delivering papers to local businesses/residents, then the Cru/Christian show at the Helltrack Dance and the main race/credits with various other stunts thrown in here and there.Īll in all, Rad is one of the best Bike/BMX/Freestyle movies ever made. As for the stunts, both the intro and credits to the movie are just about 4-5 minutes of freestyle riders showing off. Rad! has many good points to it, including incredible stunts by BMX legends Eddie Fiola and RL Osborn, music and the normal 80's love story. In true 80's style, Rad is based on a story of a small town BMXer that goes up and competes against nationally known BMXers who have big sponsers behind them (Mongoose, GT, etc.) and wins. Rad was probably the best and has quite a following among BMXer's even to this day. Some supported the true spirit of BMX, some were just cash-ins. Inevitably, there was a rash of BMX movies released. Long before the mountain bike, throughout the 80's, the only pedal-powered transport to have was a BMX.
